I have been on Effexor for narly one year now. My anxiety and depression has become worse as time goes by.
Every time I have tried to quit the Effexor the brain zaps were too much to handle and I had to always go back up in dosage again.
A constant fatigue has been with me now for the last three months as well.
My doctor wants me off the medication but we can't figure out how.
You know, you have a good doc :)
Effexor has SSRI properties and info on withdrawal is hte same as for other SSRIs such as prozac, etc.
1.Get a thorough medical evaluation from a competent non-drug oriented medical practitioner. If you were on lithium make sure your thyroid gets tested; if you were on the antipsychotics make sure you get your blood sugar tested; if you were on stimulants make sure you get your heart tested.
2.Educate yourself and your support group/family. See the resources below.
3.Coming off of benzodiazepines, barbiturates or SSRIs can be extremely hazardous. Go very slowly.
4. There are currently many doctors across the country awakening to the need for helping people through withdrawal. There are a few programs. Check out the Safe Harbor website given below.

I was given Effexor XR for job related Stress and have been suffering ever since. The stress did not go away (obviously since I stayed in my job) and evertime I mentioned this to my Doctor he increased the dose. I lost my job in May and with that my Insurance so I had to get of the drug since I could not affort it anymore.
The side effects have been horrible and lasting. From the Brain zapps to rigor in my limbs every morning to nausea diarreah bloading extreme moodswings you name it. I think this drug is dangerous beyond the good it suppose to do and would warn everybody not to take it. I have gained at least 40 lbs while on it and had extreme high bloodpreasure as well. Bottomline I went from a healthy person with job related stress to a fat crazy person with high blood preasure and even after I quit I still suffer the side effects nobody warned me about.
i have been on effexor for several years. i can't take the side effects anymore. my mouth is continuously dry, and drinking water does not help much. the dry mouth gives me bad breath, witch is very embarrassing. my constipation is so bad, that when i do have a bowel movement, it plugs up the toilet, i was a house guest twice at friends homes, and flooded the bathroom twice. i am tired all the time with no energy. i fall asleep during the day by reading. the only good is i fall asleep at night easily. but i have crazy dreams every night, and it takes me a long time to wake up in the morning. i am getting off this crap one way or the other.
